By setting the show in Europe, the series creators introduce a new tone that resonates with foreign viewers who often see the United States as a country that is blind to its faults and all to eager to pin its negative qualities on others (see literally any Donald Trump campaign speech). Journalist Ingrid Hollenbeck (Victoria Meyer – pictured above) also points out to Daniel the US custom of blaming others for the country’s misfortune without acknowledging American involvement in international disasters. In a scene in a Berlin mosque, Valerie tracks a former Georgian terrorist as an imam delivers a speech on how Islam is a religion set deeply in love and acceptance of others, a trait that is almost always overlooked in US television programmes that deal with the threat of an ISIL-type terrorist group. Although the episode deals in part with terrorism associated with Islam, it does very little to demonise the Muslim character. Unlike series like Homeland or The Americans, the incorporation of Berlin distance the show from often falling into heavy criticism of foreign governments or religions. What I loved most about the episode was, yet again, the involvement of a European city as the setting for an American intelligence series. Jenkins is wonderful to watch in his exchanges with other characters, particularly with a local cobbler who doubles as a surveillance specialist. Forbes and Jenkins both deliver dynamite performances in the episode, often butting heads, which sets up a very captivating dynamic that I look forward to watch progress as more episodes air. By focusing on characters other than Daniel throughout the episode, ‘Lights Don’t Run On Loyalty’ expands as we find out more about the lives of the other agents populating the CIA station in Berlin as well as the inner workings of the office. Review: The second episode of Berlin Station truly picks up the pace and adds the suspense promised by the first ten minuted of the pilot. Roskam and writer Olen Steinhauer explore the landscape they’ve created in order to give the series more suspense.

The episode is full of character defining moments as director Michaël R.

Hector DeJean (Rhys Ifans) is also trying to repair his relationship, both professional and romantic, with his asset who he fears may be deported before the CIA can secure his safety. On top of his drama at work, Frost is reeling from recently ending an ongoing affair with his assistant Sandra (Tamlyn Tomita) while attempting to repair his relationship with wife Kelly (Caroline Goodall) without revealing too much about the inner workings of his job. Station chief Steven Frost (Richard Jenkins) buts heads with Valerie Edwards (Michelle Forbes) as he feels she continuously undermines him in the office. Recap: After the death of Claudia (Sylvia Hoeks), Daniel continues to pursue any leads that could lead to Shaw while the rest of the CIA officers gather intelligence on a seemingly reformed Islamic radical. Check out my review and breakdown of the Berlin Station pilot and let me know what you think of the show in the comments below. The show sets itself apart from other CIA shows available in the US thanks in big part to the eccentric and vibrant setting of Berlin which truly helps set the show in a unique atmosphere while allowing the characters and events to feel more accessible seeing as they’re discussing international threats in an internation setting instead of some grey ‘Langley’ office in a backlot in Pasadena.īerlin Station‘s ‘Lights Don’t Run On Loyalty’ premiered on October 23rd on Epix as well as the network’s premium streaming service (where the episode was released last week along with the pilot.) The next episode, entitled ‘Riverrun Dry,’ will be released on October 30th. The show does so brilliantly by distancing itself a bit from the protagonist Daniel Miller (Richard Armitage) and introducing us further into the strong cast of supporting characters who are harbouring their own secrets from the CIA and the ones closest to them. After being left with a cliffhanger, I was lest in suspense to see how the spy thriller could attempt to save itself after a slightly lagging first episode. TL DR: Berlin Station is definitely picking up the pace from last week’s episode.

The series is set to debut ten episodes in its first season and every week I will watch, review and recap the episodes. Be warned for spoilers ahead but make sure to check out my TL DR before the review for a quick spoiler free review of what I thought about this week’s episode. Set in the German capital, Berlin Station follows a team of CIA operatives as they try to stop state secrets from being exposed by international hacktivist Thomas Shaw while still keeping secrets of their own under wraps. Last week Epix’s new spy thriller Berlin Station premiered.
